So here we are a month into this gardening thing. Never did I think in a million years that I would end up being a gardener. I didn’t think I’d enjoy cooking either, but it just goes to show, don’t knock something until you try it.
I got some new seeds:
loofah gourds (a.k.a. a zero waste sponge alternative)
flower assortment (free)
I haven’t gotten around to planting the lettuces because I don’t think the timing is right, plus I’ve been constructing the raised beds for the back yard. Luis put some together for me with some old pallets he brought from work. We got a weed mat and a tomato support from Orchard this weekend. I just couldn’t find the right soil mix for square foot gardening.
We got a hummingbird feeder just in time, there appears to be two little babies in the nest and they like to eat.
The cilantro in the pot is starting to sprout. The parsley sent up a flower stem for seeds which I snipped off. Hopefully doing so will keep my precious parsley alive.
Over Memorial Day Weekend I planted the loofahs next to a chain link fence in the back yard. I just piled some dirt near the fence and sowed the seeds there. A little while later I found some brick trim by the side of the house that I used to section off the area.
We sowed some grass seeds in the bald patches and I found an empty planter for the lavender. I also tried planting some old green onions in the mint container.
In the front yard, the morning glories are starting to come to life.
I tried transplanting what I think was one of the squash sprouts, because of the sunchoke infestation, but I don’t think it survived. Another one sprouted up and now that we removed as many sunchokes as possible, I think it might stand a chance.
Out of all the sunflower seeds, only one germinated so I got some more giant sunflower seeds so we can try again. I think I’ll be planting flowers primarily in the front of the house and save the veggies for the back.
I also noticed that there is a section of the yard where butterflies constantly fly back and forth. I want to create something for them as well and maybe a bird house as well as there are two little black birds that like to hang around the yard.
